Painting

To study Painting is to step into one of the most iconic and evolving conversations in art history. You will learn the foundations: color, form, composition, surface, and light with intention and depth, guided by artists who are passionate about the craft and its future.

But painting does not stand still. At Illinois, we challenge you to build on its rich legacy while experimenting with new materials, formats, and ideas. Whether you are drawn to portraiture or abstraction, comics or social practice, you will find space to stretch, question, and refine your voice.

Painting is more than medium. It is a mindset. It is about sustained looking, critical thinking, and making images that speak to the present moment while echoing centuries of artistic innovation.

You will have opportunities to work across disciplines, collaborate on community projects, and engage with contemporary culture through exhibitions, critiques, and dialogue. Our faculty will support you in developing a studio practice that is rigorous, imaginative, and entirely your own.
