The Art Education Student Organization (AESO) is one giant organization that includes anyone who has a love of Art Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign! AESO plans get-togethers, field trips, networking opportunities, workshops, and idea-sharing. All UIUC Art Education students are welcome to join this student run organization. A community arts project directed by Professor Dr. Jennifer Bergmark, alongside artist Amanda Browder at Stratton Academy for the Arts. Chromatopia is a celebration of art education and art across generations where Browder, Stratton Elementary and the School of Art and Design aimed at breaking down barriers between schools and the local community, and to shine a light on the power of art education.
The Curtis C. Nash Summer Art School for Children is a series of art workshops–modeled after the famous Saturday Art School–created by members of the Art Education Program at UIUC and open for participation to children from Champaign and Vermillion counties. The courses are offered at no cost to the participants through the generous support of the Curtis C. Nash Children’s Creativity Fund, the School of Art + Design, The Nash Everyday Arts Lab Fund, and the Art Education Program at UIUC.
Homemade with Love: More Living Room was a yearlong exhibition curated and organized by professor Dr. Blair E. Smith at the Krannert Art Museum. The exhibition is a multimedia installation that brings together interior design, audio and visual art made with Black girls.
On-Contamination was an international project directed by graduate students Catalina Hernandez-Cabal and Natalia Espinel with Brazilian artist Ricardo Basbaum.
Social Practice as Pedagogy as a research cluster, sponsored by the Humanities Research Institute. The group was led by Drs. Ruth Nicole Brown, Jennifer Bergmark, Jorge Lucero, alongside graduate student Angela Baldus.
Led by professors Dr. Jennifer Bergmark and Guen Montgomery, the Urbana-Champaign Satellite Coral Reef was a multi-year project enacted in partnership with artist Margaret Wertheim. Hundreds of community pieces were contributed to create multiple installations, public programming, and lectures were conducted.
The international scholarly journal Visual Arts Research (VAR) provides a forum for historical, critical, cultural, psychological, educational and conceptual research in visual arts and aesthetic education. The journal has been edited by members of the Art Education faculty at UIUC since 1973. It is currently edited by professors Drs. Sarah Travis and Laura Hetrick.
In the fall of 2022 the Art Education Student Organization organized a multi-university conference for pre-service art teachers. This event featured workshops, sessions, a keynote by Metro State University of Denver Professor Anne Thulson, and lots of good food.
The TAKEOVER is an annual event put on by all 180+ first-year students of Art, Design, & Society. In one day an exhibition is installed, then celebrated for a day, then taken down (leaving no trace). Work is installed and performed allover the School of Art & Design’s main building and grounds by 180+ students.
