About Soyoung Jung
Biography
Soyoung Jung is a visual artist and educator working across painting, drawing, printmaking, and mixed media. Her practice investigates the psychological and cultural dimensions of architectural space, often drawing inspiration from off-street alleys, childhood memories, and her transnational experiences between South Korea and the United States. She employs materials rooted in Korean traditional techniques, including handmade mulberry paper (Hanji), mineral pigments, watercolor, and calligraphy ink, in combination with contemporary methods to examine how spaces shape personal memory and cultural identity. Jung earned her MFA in Drawing and Painting from Purdue University and her BFA in Visual Communication Design from Sookmyung Women’s University. She previously taught drawing courses at Purdue University prior to her appointment at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
