About Savio Mukachirayil

Biography
Savio M. Mukachirayil is a designer, artist, and educator focused on the advancement of integral human development and global stewardship through creative inquiry. His multidisciplinary experience spans industry, consultancy, and academia across London, Essen, Dubai, Chennai, Seoul, Singapore, and Illinois—bringing a unique global perspective on design.
Savio is the founder of The Design/Contemplate Lab, an initiative at the intersection of design and philosophy. The lab reflects on emerging scientific and technological paradigms, recalibrating design methods to ensure that the means align ethically with good ends. Its mission is to foster responsibility and intentionality in creative practice.

Fields of Interest
Current research explores topics such as, the nature of creativity in artificial intelligence, the perception of form through semantic concepts, and, the use of bio-based polymers to reduce waste —which has intersected into his classroom. In his teaching, he emphasizes experiential learning and cultivates a holistic studio environment where students grow through hands-on practice and philosophical reflection.

- ARTD 201 - Industrial Design I (Fall 23)
Introduction to the creative process and methods involved in industrial design; research, modelling, form giving, prototyping and communication with emphasis on user-centred design. Projects of escalating scale and complexity complemented by lectures and demonstrations. - ARTD 228 - Computer Applications (Spring 24)
Concepts, methods and applications of computer softwares to aid the design of products for manufacture as well as utilising rendering, lighting and layout techniques to communicate products visually. - ARTD 225 - Design Drawing (Fall 24-25)
Introduction to rapid drawing methods and tools used by designers. Focuses on theory and application of orthographic and perspective drawing for communication of design ideas. Prerequisite: Industrial Design majors must have completed the First-Year Curriculum in Art & Design. - ARTD 326 - Sustainability & Manufacturing (Fall 24-25, Spring 25)
Exploration of environmental origins, theory and practice of sustainable product design. Environmentally-responsive design methodologies and topics such as industrial ecology, dematerialization, design for disassembly, design for recycling and life-cycle assessment.
